The South Rises

Its almost two hours since the polls closed in South Carolina and it appears Barack Obama is going to pull out an overwhelming victory. According to CNN at this minute Obama captured 54% Clinton 27% and Edwards 19%. In exit Polls you can really see just how widespread this victory was. He led both men and women, all age groups, except for the 65+ which went to Clinton. But what really helped Barack Obama win was the African-American vote, which reports said was about 50% of Democratic primary voters. He took well over 70% of the black vote. However, with white voters he did much worse. If Obama is to have any hope of winning the nomination he is going to have to start connecting with white voters. This is a great victory for him, but we'll see if this can carry over to Super Tuesday. Keep in mind that all Democratic primaries dole out their delegates proportionally...there are no Winner-take-all primaries. This means that if Clinton and Obama continue to split primary victories by close margins that neither one may get enough delegates to win the nomination.

Although Florida is next on the list for primaries, due to the state moving its primary up in the schedule without the Democratic Party's permission NO DELEGATES are at stake.

So come Super Tuesday we may see which way both parties' races are heading. This thing is going to get really interesting.
